Sumatra Add-On: Volcanoes & Waterfalls

January 27 – February 1, 2026

What’s the trip about?

Starting off in Medan, Sumatra’s largest city, we make our way to the cool highlands of Berastagi, a mountain town surrounded by volcanoes and farms. We’ll climb Mount Sibayak, a steaming volcano with panoramic views, unwind in nearby hot springs, and stop by the dramatic Sipiso Piso Waterfall, crashing 120 meters into the jungle.

Then we’re off to Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake. Life slows down here. We’ll cruise around Samosir Island, visit Batak villages, swim in the lake, and learn about one of Indonesia’s most fascinating local cultures.

Day 1

Touchdown in Medan

Welcome to Sumatra. We'll meet at the hotel, have a dinner and get ready for tomorrow. You’ll need your energy for what’s coming.

🏨 Sleep: Medan

Day 2

Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Lake Toba

Rise early and buckle up. We’re hitting the road to Berastagi, a little mountain town about 2.5 hours away. From there, you’ll lace up your boots and tackle Mount Sibayak. Don’t worry—it’s only about 2 hours up and down, but the views from the crater rim are worth every bead of sweat. After your victory photo, soak your tired legs in hot springs before grabbing some local grub. Next stop: Sipiso Piso waterfall. This bad boy is one of Indonesia’s tallest at 120 meters, and it thunders straight into the valley below—cue the drone shots. From there, it’s a scenic drive to Parapat and a short ferry across to Tuk Tuk on Samosir Island, smack in the middle of Lake Toba. Tonight, you’ll sleep with lake views and mountain air swirling around you.

🏨 Sleep: Berastagi

Day 3

Easy Rider on Samosir Island

Today, life slows down. Grab a scooter (channel your inner backpacker) and cruise the Tuk Tuk loop. This isn’t about rushing—it’s about feeling the wind on your face, stopping off at Batak villages like Ambarita and Tomok, dipping into natural hot springs, and cannonballing into Lake Toba whenever it calls. Chill vibes, fresh air, and a reminder that sometimes adventure is about doing less.

🏨 Sleep: Lake Toba.

Day 4

Island Time: One More Day In Paradise

Because one day at Lake Toba just isn’t enough. You’ll have another chance to explore the island at your own pace—more scooter loops, more Batak culture, more dips in that impossibly blue water. Or just park yourself lakeside with a cold Bintang and call it a win. No wrong answers here.

🏨 Sleep: Lake Toba.
