About this trip
Trip Overview:
Myanmar is often forgotten – we’re changing that. This trip centers around The Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival, a legendary, untamed, and easily one of the most jaw-dropping spectacles anywhere in Asia.
This 9-day adventure hits Myanmar’s absolute greatest hits before culminating in the madness of Shan State’s annual festival of light. We start in Yangon with colonial streetscapes, sizzling Chinatown night markets, and the glowing gold of Shwedagon Pagoda. We fly straight into ancient Bagan to explore thousands of red-brick temples across the desert plains—complete with an optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight and a visit to the sacred spirit monastery of Mount Popa.
From Bagan, we take a scenic road trip across central Myanmar into Shan State, exploring Inle Lake by private longtail boat through stilt hamlets, floating gardens, and the crumbling forest stupas of Indein.
Then comes the grand finale: three days in the mountain capital of Taunggyi for the Fire Balloon Festival. By day, enormous hand-crafted animal balloons lift into the sky; by night, massive paper balloons laden with hundreds of handmade fireworks ascend into the darkness, raining cascades of color and sparks over cheering crowds. It’s loud, raw, exhilarating, and completely unforgettable.

Day 1
Welcome to Yangon & Sunset at Shwedagon
Mingalaba and welcome to Myanmar! Arrive at Yangon International Airport, where our team meets you and transfers you to our boutique hotel. In the afternoon, we head into downtown Yangon to take in its atmospheric British colonial architecture and bustling street markets. Before dusk, we visit the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda. Dominating the skyline at nearly 100 metres tall, this golden monument is the spiritual heart of Myanmar. We’ll join pilgrims and monks circling the marble terraces as candles are lit and the spire reflects against the evening sky. Tonight, we kick off our adventure with a welcome dinner and cold beers on Chinatown’s lively 19th Street.
🏨 Sleep: Yangon
Day 2
Morning Flight to Ancient Bagan
We catch an early morning flight northwest to Bagan, home to one of the most astonishing archaeological sights in the world. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, ancient kings built thousands of temples across this arid river plain, and over 2,000 remain standing today. After checking into our hotel, we set out to explore iconic monuments like the gilded Ananda Temple and the imposing brick corridors of Dhammayangyi.
🏨 Sleep: Bagan
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Floating Gardens, Leg-Rowers & The Stupas of Indein
A full-day expedition across Inle Lake by private wooden longtail boat. Inle is world-renowned for its Intha fishermen, who balance on one leg while rowing with the other to leave both hands free for fishing. We'll cruise through villages built on towering stilts, glide past floating hydroponic tomato gardens anchored to the lakebed, and swap to paddle canoes to navigate narrow neighborhood canals. In the afternoon, we motor down a winding river tributary to Indein, where a hillside forest holds over a thousand centuries-old brick stupas slowly being overtaken by jungle greenery.
🏨 Sleep: Nyaung Shwe / Inle Lake
Day 6
Inle Countryside & The Opening of the Fire Balloon Festival
We spend a peaceful morning exploring the rural countryside around Inle Lake and visiting our local Mudita community partner before traveling up into the mountains to Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State. After checking in and exploring the bustling hill-station market, we head to the festival grounds for our first evening at the Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival. As dusk settles, massive hot-air balloons loaded with hundreds of fireworks and candle frames are lit and released into the night sky. The energy is electric, with music, food stalls, and roaring cheers from the crowd as the night sky fills with fire.
🏨 Sleep: Taunggyi
Day 7
Taunggyi, Shan Culture & Daytime Balloon Launches
Today we experience both sides of the Tazaungdaing festivities. By day, the festival field hosts daytime competitions where local neighborhood teams launch giant paper balloons shaped like two-story elephants, birds, horses, and dragons into the mountain sky. In between launches, we explore Taunggyi and surrounding Shan and Pa-O minority villages, learning about local hill-tribe customs and cuisine. After sunset, we return to the festival grounds as the heavy night-balloon competition gets underway, with teams competing to launch the most intricate firework-laden balloons of the festival.
Day 8
The Grand Festival Finale
Enjoy a relaxed morning to recharge after late nights at the festival grounds. In the afternoon, we dive back into the local celebrations as teams prepare for the final, most prestigious balloon launches of the year. The festival finale brings out the most elaborate designs—some carrying thousands of firecrackers and intricate candle lanterns that paint moving Buddhist motifs against the clouds. We’ll celebrate our final night in Shan State right in the heart of the action with local street food and festival drinks.
Day 9
Flight to Yangon & Homeward Bound
After breakfast, we transfer down to Heho Airport for our domestic flight back to Yangon. Upon arrival at Yangon International Airport, you can easily connect directly to your international departures home or onward to your next stop in Southeast Asia.
