Tanzania Charity Trip – Turnip Home

A trip to East Africa is a kind of adventure everyone has been dreaming about. On this Turnip Home exculsive tour, it’s time to tick a few major bucket list items.  Spotting the Big 5 on a safari, learning about the tribal cultures, and max relaxing on white-sand beaches in Zanzibar. The trip includes building 3 classrooms for our partner school in Arusha, Tanzania, allowing you to see the traditional lifestyle along the road and also learn it from the locals. This is going to be great!

  • Visit a Maasai village and witness a traditional welcoming into their community.
  • Hit untouched island paradise on our optional Zanzibar add-on. Private boats with sunsets and drinks, pool time and local food. You earned a break after all that hard work!
Tanzania Charity Trip – Turnip Home

Arusha, Tanzania we partner with a local Maasai community on the outskirts of the town. Ilkiurei Primary School has been starved of any Government funding, and with the buildings in disrepair, it has meant kids have had to double up in classrooms. Seriously affecting their learning capacity.

That's where Turnip Homes come in. With your funding, and hard work on site, we'll be essentially rebuilding the main 3 classrooms at the school entrance, making them fit for purpose once more.

1

Day 1

Meet in Edmonton, bags packed, ready to depart for YYC airport to start the adventure of a lifetime.
2

Day 2

Arrive as a group into Kilimanjaro Airport. Your airport transfer will meet you and drive to Arusha and check-in to hotel and have a quick welcome brief and maybe try our first Kili beer before bed.
3

Day 3

Get ready for an experience like no other. After breakfast, we'll head to Ilkurei Primary School, where we'll be met by Beatrice, the headmistress, and 100s of screaming kids! After a community tour with the village elders, you'll get a great idea of why we are here. After a local lunch, it's time to get your hands dirty. We'll have a work brief, and then it's pure elbow grease to get this project done in time!
4

Day 4

It’s time to get your hands dirty agian. Dress accordingly, your clothes will never be the same again. We hire people local to the community to carry out the bulk of the construction long in advance, so depending on how far along they are, your jobs could range from shifting sand & bricks, to painting the new classrooms, helping landscape the area, or putting up fences. Either way, factor in heat, sweat and smiles.
5

Day 5

The Turnip Team will add the final touches to the classrooms, murals, furnishings, things that are otherwise neglected, and the school will present a wonderful opening ceremony, complete with local dance and music. Then it's time to say goodbye!
6

Day 6

Hope you had an early night, because we are up for bucket list item this morning. Safari time! If we’re lucky, we should be seeing HUGE numbers of animals, so keep those fingers crossed! Let’s hope to spot the big 5 as we explore the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater, perhaps the most exciting place to safari on the planet. We’ll be sleeping in tents amidst the wildlife that evening, keep your eyes peeled for those hyenas who love to enter camp.
7

Day 7

Another day of game drives amongst lions, rhinos, giraffes to name a few. Today we head to the UNESCO world heritage site of the Ngorongoro crater, where we hope to spot a rhino or two. Hope you have some spare battery packs, you’ll need them. Tonight we’ll sleep in tents on the crater rim.
8

Day 8

One last morning game drive to try to tick off those elusive animals, then we will be driving back to Arusha, spotting wildlife all the way back. We'll spend the night in Arusha and chat about the epic Safari over a few cold ones.
9

Day 9

Depending on the adventure you've chose, it's either to the airport today to head back to Edmonton or to take the short flight over to Zanzibar and keep the fun going.
