We say goodbye to the Big Mango and hop on a propellor plane north to the Burmese border. From the airport, we’ll check into our hotel for the next few nights of our project, then make our way to visit the community we’ll be working with. Here we’ll have a debrief from our project coordinator, himself a former Burmese refugee.
Day 2 on our project. As many of our returners can testify, the projects can be hard work, so we hope you’re ready. Depending on how far the construction has progressed with the local staff we have been hiring over the last few weeks, jobs can include lugging bricks, shifting sand, painting the buildings and of course playing with the kids.
Finally some time to yourself. A lazy morning, followed by some pool-time, shopping, or a $5 Thai massage. Depending on how strong those cocktails you were drinking last night were, a little R&R is exactly what the doctor ordered. A group dinner for happy hour as the sun sets behind Chiang Mai’s mountain temple is the perfect end to a chill day.
Today you’ll see why the travelers of the world have fallen in love with Chiang Mai. First off, we’ll take the winding road up the mountain to see one of Northern Thailand’s most sacred temple, Doi Suthep. Here you’ll have the chance to be blessed by the local monks, and the views of Chiang Mai below are breathtaking. We’ll stop at a waterfall on the way back so bring your swimmers!
That evening we’ll hit up the Chiang Mai night bazaar for a spot of shopping, and a chance to watch some Muay Thai boxing. Ouch!
Say goodbye to Chiangers, and get those elephant pants ready. Pai is awaiting us. A beautiful 3 hour journey through northern Thailand will find us in Pai, a place where travelers, artists, digital nomads, rastas and everyone from every other walk of life imaginable find themselves congregating during their journey to northern Thailand. Walk around the town, soak up the vibes, and don’t forget some famous Thai ice coffee. Easy on the sugar, that stuff will blow your head off.
The best of Pai. We’ll check out Pai’s stunning landscapes, the World War II memorial bridge and of course Pai Canyon. Before we make it back to town, we can take a dip in one of the local waterfalls and top up that tan. Followed up by an evening in Pai, expect lots of Bob Marley tunes and questionable qualities of drinks at night. Our last night, handkerchiefs at the ready :’(
The last day?! Already?! How did that happen? We’ll be leaving Pai early in the morning for those who have a flight out of Chiang Mai, and then that’s a wrap folks! or continue to Krabi with us :)
