Announcing Mudita’s 2027 Expeditions: From the Center of the Sahara to the Roof of the World

How we pick our tours every year is a something of a fine art. Johnny and I sit down, shout countries, regions, festivals, and cool things we want to see and a masterpiece is born. That’s pretty much it, we dream it up and hope people like it.

So far for 2027, we have put together three massive overland expeditions spanning five continents and some of the least-traveled corners of the planet. We kick off the year crossing the Sahara from Algeria to Tunisia, take on the highest railway and road trip on Earth to Mount Everest in the spring, and venture deep into the Amazonian frontier of South America in the autumn.

Here is our official 2027 expedition lineup, in chronological order:

1. Algeria & Tunisia: The Grand North Africa Overland

Dates: January 14 – 28, 2027 (15 Days)

Route: Djanet → Algiers → Ghardaïa → Constantine → Timgad & Djemila → Tipaza → Tunis & Carthage → Sidi Bou Said → El Jem → Matmata & Ong Jmal → Kairouan

Almost nobody travels to Algeria, and hardly anyone ever connects it overland across the desert into Tunisia. That’s exactly why we’re doing it all as one continuous 15-day journey. Africa’s largest country is nearly four times the size of France, packed with Roman ruins that easily rival Rome itself and the wildest Sahara scenery on Earth. Combining it with the mountain oases, troglodyte caves, and Mediterranean coastline of Tunisia turns this into the ultimate North African expedition.

We kick things off by flying deep into the southern Sahara to Djanet, right by the border with Niger and Libya in the Tassili n’Ajjer region. This landscape feels more like an alien planet than Earth, filled with towering red sandstone arches, prehistoric rock art, and vast desert dunes. We will spend our days exploring the sands and our nights in a traditional camp alongside local Tuareg guides, sharing campfire meals under a sky with zero light pollution.

From the deep south, we fly up to Algiers, a city that surprises everyone by feeling far more Mediterranean and southern European than you would expect. We’ll get lost exploring the whitewashed Ottoman lanes and hidden courtyards of the UNESCO-listed Casbah before catching a domestic flight south into Ghardaïa. Built a thousand years ago by the Mozabites in the M’Zab Valley, this fortified desert city has inspired architects from around the world and feels completely frozen in time.

Next comes Constantine, quite possibly the most dramatic city in all of Africa. Perched on sheer cliffs high above the Rhumel Gorge, its neighborhoods are stitched together by soaring suspension bridges that are genuinely knee-wobbling to cross. From there, we dive into a string of world-class Roman cities where you will barely see another tourist in sight. We’ll walk the original paved streets and Trajan’s Arch at Timgad, explore the hillside temples and mosaics of Djemila in the green mountains, and wander the seaside ruins of Tipaza scattered among pine trees right on the Mediterranean shore.

Then the adventure continues straight across into Tunisia. We start along the coast, exploring the ancient Phoenician ruins of Carthage and the famous blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said overlooking the Mediterranean. Heading south, we step inside the colossal Roman amphitheater of El Jem, an ancient arena that rivals Rome’s Colosseum without the crowds of selfie sticks.

As we push into the southern desert, we head underground into the troglodyte cave homes of Matmata and out into the sweeping dunes of Ong Jmal, walking through the very spots where Star Wars was filmed. We’ll spend a night immersed in desert hospitality at a Berber camp, hike the palm-filled mountain canyons and waterfalls of Chebika and Tamerza, and finish our overland route in Kairouan, one of Islam’s holiest and most historic cities, before heading back to Tunis.

2. Everest & Tibet Overland: Chengdu to Kathmandu

Dates: April 17 – 29, 2027 (13 Days)

This trip is legit stacked. Most itineraries have one or two headline moments, but this one delivers them every single day.

We start off in Chongqing, China’s viral cyberpunk megacity. It feels like Blade Runner brought to life, with futuristic elevated highways, monorail trains running right through apartment blocks, and the world’s largest drone light show over the river. From there, we head over to Chengdu to spend a morning up close with the giant pandas at the research base, followed by a visit to the 1,200-year-old Leshan Giant Buddha carved directly into the river cliffs.

Then, forget airport security lines and boarding gates. We board the legendary Qinghai-Tibet Railway for a two-day journey across the Tibetan Plateau. As the highest railway on Earth, it climbs above 5,000 meters through endless grasslands, frozen alpine lakes, and snow-capped peaks, with oxygen pumped directly into the sleeper cars so everyone can relax and soak in the views outside their bunk window.

Arriving in Lhasa, we take time to explore the ancient Tibetan capital, wandering Barkhor Street with local pilgrims, visiting Jokhang Temple, and exploring the towering Potala Palace. We also visit our partner school in the area, spending time with the students and delivering supplies we’ve brought with us, making this journey about genuine human connections rather than just ticking sights off a map.

From Lhasa, we set off on one of Asia’s greatest road trips. Driving west across high Himalayan mountain passes, we make our way through Shigatse and climb toward Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side. Standing directly beneath the massive north face of Mount Everest is one of those moments photographs simply can’t capture, and we will spend the night sleeping right below the tallest mountain on Earth.

To wrap it all up, we descend from the plateau into the green Himalayan valleys, crossing the international land border on foot into Nepal, and finishing our journey in the colourful, buzzing streets of Kathmandu.

3. The 3 Guianas Overland Expedition

Dates: September 8 – 17, 2027 (10 Days)

Route: Georgetown (Guyana) → Kaieteur Falls → Paramaribo (Suriname) → Kourou & Devil’s Island → Cayenne (French Guiana)

When travelers think of South America, they picture Patagonia, Machu Picchu, or Rio. Almost nobody thinks of the Guianas, tucked away on the wild northeastern shoulder of the continent. Wedged between Venezuela and Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana make up South America’s most culturally surreal and forgotten frontier.

This is an overland expedition across three territories that could not feel more distinct despite sharing borders. We begin in Georgetown, Guyana—an English-speaking Caribbean enclave on South American soil known for its sprawling wooden colonial architecture and rum distilleries. From there, we take a charter flight deep into the untamed Amazonian interior to witness Kaieteur Falls. Plummeting 741 feet in a single, thunderous drop into a pristine rainforest gorge, Kaieteur is roughly four times higher than Niagara Falls and sees only a handful of visitors each week.

Next, we cross the border river into Suriname, the only Dutch-speaking nation in South America. The capital of Paramaribo is a UNESCO World Heritage gem where Dutch colonial wooden architecture meets a vibrant cultural melting pot of Maroon, Creole, Indigenous, and Javanese communities. It is one of the only places on Earth where a major Jewish synagogue and an Islamic mosque sit harmoniously side-by-side sharing a parking lot.

Finally, we cross the Maroni River into French Guiana—which is not an independent country, but an official department of France and part of the European Union, complete with euros, baguettes, and French gendarmes deep in the Amazon basin. We’ll visit Europe’s equatorial spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, take a boat out to the infamous Salvation Islands (Îles du Salut) including the ruins of Devil’s Island penal colony, and wrap up our cross-border expedition in Cayenne. Ten days, three distinct flags, dense Amazon rainforest, and zero tourist crowds.
